The Chamaedorea elegans, commonly known as the Parlour Palm is native to the rainforests of Southern Mexico and Guatemala in Central America. In its natural habitat, it grows in shaded and humid conditions.
In the Victorian era households were fond of exotic plants and the Parlour Palm became a fashionable choice for indoor greenery. The Chamadedorea elegans would proudly be displayed in the parkour, the smartest room in the house.
Apart from "parlour palm", it is also known by other common names such as Neanthe bella palm and Good luck palm. Today, it remains a popular plant known for its relatively low maintenance requirements and adaptability to indoor conditions.
