Top Tip

Plant 5 per metre for a dense, formal hedge. This is a great alternative for box hedge. Taxus is resistant to box blight and box caterpillar.

How to care for Taxus Hedging

Icon
Aspect
Happy anywhere

Taxus (Yew) thrives in both full sun and deep shade.

Icon
Care Level
Easy to look after

Regular pruning isn't necessary. Trim in the spring to encourage new growth and again in the autumn to shape.

Icon
Watering
Weekly when establishing

Water deeply during the first year—especially in dry spells—to encourage strong root establishment. Avoid overwatering as Yew dislikes waterlogged soil.

Icon
Feeding
Compost and mulch annually

Mix compost into the soil at planting and mulch each spring to improve fertility and moisture retention.

Soil
Will be fine in most soils

The Taxus Dome doesn't like soggy roots. Ensure the soil is well drained. When planting add a drainage medium, such as grit or crocs, to encourage better drainage. Taxus tolerates most soil types—including urban and coastal soils.
