Deer Fern
The Deer Fern, also known as a Hard Fern, is a pretty evergreen fern that brings year long interest to areas of shade. Low maintenance and robust this fern adds pretty texture to your outside space. This plant remains green throughout the year and is a great option for year long interest in the shade. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
Top Tip
As the fronds mature they progress to a pretty brown frame, adding additional winter texture and tones which contrast beautifully alongside the new fresh green growth. Remove the old fronds in the spring by cutting them off at the base with secateurs.
How to care for Deer Fern
Aspect
The Deer Fern is a great option for the shade but also does well in partial shade.
Care Level
Tidy old fronds once a year in the spring. This will encourage stronger, taller fronds to develop through.
Watering
Water when planting and don't let the soil get dry.
Feeding
Plant with a good quality, peat free compost. Throughout the spring and summer feed with a liquid fertiliser to boost growth.
Soil
Make sure the soil is well drained but damp.
