Key information
The Ostrich Fern, also known as Matteuccia struthiopteris is fantastic for adding lush, green texture to shaded garden beds, riverbanks or woodland gardens. The upright feather-like fronds unfurl in spring to reveal light green, shuttlecock ferns that resemble ostrich plumes. The fronds will die back in autumn with fresh appearing in the spring. This plant has been awarded the Award of Garden Merit by the RHS.

This is a very low maintenance fern
Cut back old fronds in late winter or early spring. This will encourage stronger, taller fronds to develop through.

Keep soil moist
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water well throughout the summer to maintain wet conditions.

Plant with a good quality, peat free compost. Do not use liquid fertiliser as it is sensitive to over fertilisation.
