When is the best time to plant?

Will Williams, Soto’s Creative Director, and winner of several RHS medal-winning gardens, explains five reasons why Autumn is when you should be planting your borders and patio pots.

When should I plant my borders is one of the most asked questions we get at Soto. It is a myth that the summer is the best time to plant, although the warmer months do offer maximum and immediate impact. Autumn or Spring, when the soil is warm and moist, is when plants have the best chance of establishing a strong root system.

Why Autumn is the best time to plant

Will Williams, Soto’s Creative Director, and winner of several RHS medal-winning gardens, explains five reasons why Autumn is when you should be planting your borders and patio pots. Planting in the Autumn provides the best conditions for plants to root in – creating healthier, more established plants next year.
  1. Evergreens and shrubs can be planted year-round. But they are often lifted from their growers in October as they go into their dormant winter state.
  2. It’s best to avoid planting between the middle of November to early Spring to ensure the soil isn’t too wet and cold. If you do plant over the harsh winter, there is a risk of frost or frozen ground.
  3. Autumn is the longest time before growth begins again, giving the plants longer to settle in and establish.
  4. It is harvest time so there is an abundance of stock in nurseries meaning quality is better than ever.
  5. Planting in the Autumn means the plants will offer your outside space impact as they are large and have benefited from the summers growth.
The best rule to follow is when it is 6 degrees and up, roots will still grow. In the UK, this is up until about Christmas.
