Seasonal guide to care for your
Ostrich Fern

Ostrich Fern, or Matteuccia struthiopteris, is a perennial fern prized for its large, arching, bright green fronds that resemble ostrich feathers. Ideal for woodland gardens and shaded borders, it creates bold texture and architectural interest throughout the growing season. This plant has been awarded the Award of Garden Merit by the RHS.

Providing seasonal care is essential to ensure healthy growth, strong frond development, and long-term performance. Below is a complete seasonal care guide for Ostrich Fern throughout the year.

Spring

Pruning and Maintenance

In early spring, remove any old, damaged, or weathered fronds from the previous season using clean, sharp secateurs. This allows fresh new fronds to unfurl and keeps the plant looking tidy.

Feed

Apply a generous mulch of well-rotted compost in spring to enrich the soil and support vigorous growth.

Dividing (if necessary)

Every 4–5 years, Ostrich Fern can be divided in spring if clumps become overcrowded. Lift the plant carefully, divide the rhizomes, and replant into moist, humus-rich soil.

.

Watering

Begin regular watering as temperatures rise, keeping the soil consistently moist during establishment.

Summer

Pruning and Maintenance

Minimal pruning is required during summer. Remove any damaged or yellowing fronds as needed to maintain appearance and airflow.

Mulching

Apply a 2 to 3-inch layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep roots cool in warm weather.

Watering

Ostrich Fern prefers consistently moist soil and may struggle in dry conditions. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in warm weather, and avoid allowing the soil to dry out.

Autumn

Pruning and Maintenance

As fronds naturally yellow and die back in autumn, they can be removed to tidy the plant. Avoid disturbing the crown unnecessarily.

Protection from frost

Refresh the mulch around the base of the plant to provide added insulation as temperatures begin to fall.

Winter

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove any remaining dead fronds during winter to keep the planting area tidy and reduce the risk of disease. Avoid damaging the crown.

Protection from frost

Ostrich Fern is fully hardy and generally requires little winter protection. A light mulch helps protect the crown from extreme cold and winter wet.

Pest and disease prevention

Pests and diseases are uncommon in winter, but inspect occasionally for slug damage or rot caused by excessive moisture and remove any affected growth promptly.

Plant SOS

Browning fronds – A sign of dry soil or sun exposure. Increase watering and provide shade.

Yellowing fronds – A sign of poor drainage or waterlogged soil. Improve drainage and reduce watering.

Sparse growth – A sign of low nutrients or overcrowding. Enrich soil with organic matter and divide mature clumps.

Frond collapse – A sign of drought stress or exposure. Maintain consistent moisture and shelter from strong winds.

Slow establishment – A sign of a naturally spreading fern. Allow time for rhizomes to develop fully.

Holes in leaves – A sign of slug and snail damage. Use Slug and Snail repellent or Slug and Snail control.
